described¡¡during¡¡the¡¡Modoc¡¡war¡¡of¡¡1873¡¡so¡¡hard¡¡and¡¡flinty¡¡that

Williamson's¡¡large¡¡command¡¡made¡¡little¡¡impression¡¡on¡¡its¡¡surface£»

leaving¡¡in¡¡fact£»¡¡only¡¡indistinct¡¡traces¡¡of¡¡its¡¡line¡¡of¡¡march¡£¡¡¡¡By
